Bidor Half Marathon 2008

An interesting half marathon :) Eventful, LITERALLY and many 1sts.

IMD & wifey were very nice to arrange almost everything for me. From race registration, booking of accomodation, collection of race bibs to to-and-fro coach tickets, they've got all that nicely done for me. I just had to appear at the respective places. I'm reli very thankful to them.

Ok, let's start from Singapore to Kampar

9pm - i was still at the bus stop near my place. Earlier on, I saw bus#961 whisked past :( My coach was scheduled to depart at 10pm! Well still, stingy me refused to take a cab to Golden Mile. Since my place is so near, i was confident i cld reach in time. So i took bus#14 with the intention of alighting opp Suntec then perhaps take a bus/cab. VERY wrong choice. I shld have trusted my instincts. #14 passes by Orchard Road before reaching City Hall and traffic condition was (of course) bad on a Fri nite. To cut the story short, i alighted at NTUC Income Bldg, boarded a cab in the middle of the traffic, searched for Konsortium in a frantic rush & finally got seated on the coach 5 min prior to departure *phew*

See my happy face on the coach *wink* For the 1st time, I got my own TV on a coach!

After the madness wears off, i slowly realised...it's my 1st time travelling ALONE to Msia. Gosh! I always tried to avoid gg to Msia and Indonesia on my own cos i dun feel safe despite been there umpteenth times.

Almost to Kampar

20min after we stopped at Puduraya, the driver suddenly told me to go over to the other (less "sud"-looking) coach. Reason being i was the only one left in the coach who was gg to Kampar. Duh. Anyhow, i was too sleepy to argue. Thankfully, the trip after that took just an hr odd.

Kampar (eve of race day)

At 6:05am, the good news is I finally reached Kampar. Bad news - The coach stopped me in the middle of a quiet street that looks like Kreta Ayer. Later on, i learnt that it's actually Kampar town. I tot the coach wld alight me at the hotel doorstep *frown* Some ray of light in the darkness - there's a couple & 2 cabbies with me. I asked the couple for directions & they suggested me to take a cab to the hotel. The estimated fare was MYR10. Hmm...seems like i din have a choice. I checked out the rate with the Chinese cabbie uncle & he quoted MYR8. Eventually, i voluntarily paid MYR10 since he seems like a kind soul. He tot i was there for studies. Hehhe...very flattering. At my age, I can still pull off as an uni student. Must be at nite so uncle can't see me clearly :P

I checked into the room in a jiffy and KO in no time. Yes, i must mention at this point. This hotel that we were staying - Grand Kampar, apparently is the best hotel in the area. In spite of my fatigue, I was impressed by what i saw when i stepped into the room - spacious, clean and comfy.
12.00pm - i woke up cos my stomach was growling for food and the strong sun rays were shining thru' the windows (hee, i was too lazy to draw the curtains). Went to the nearby kopitiam for wanton mee. The food is so nice and cheap there. I had the noodles & home-brewed barley for MYR4!

Roamed around in the vicinity. Nothing much...just houses and provision shops, bakery and some basic neighbourhood facilities.

Oh ya! I saw a granny cutting her grandson's hair. So cute. Don't think many of us do that in Singapore now. I was too paisei to go near so just quickly took a snap from far. See lah...never aim properly.

1.30pm - i was back in the hotel room cos there isn't anything much to see and the weather was reli hot. Looks like it's not gonna be that easy a 21km if the same weather persists tmr.

2.15pm - IMD called. They have reached the hotel. I went to the lobby and was surprised to see a big gp. There were 14 of them - 10 gers and 4 guys.

After they settled in, we went to recce the hotel gym and pool then proceeded to Kampar town. It's a small town and things were slow. We went to eat ice kachang at this empty coffeeshop. I only drank hot milo in case my tummy reacts badly. Before we were even halfway done, they started to close their gates for the day. That was 5pm.

We left the place, walked a little more and headed back to hotel for shower. I took these quick snaps. Kinda liked them - A certain kind of nostalgia...

At abt 7pm, we returned to the town for dinner. Settled for this restaurant, wanting to try the famous Curry Chicken wrapped in Bread (akin to Singapore 933). The staff showed us in. Loud karaoke music greeted us as we laid foot onto the 2nd floor. OMG! We were gate-crashing into a wedding dinner! No wonder the "customers" were looking at us weirdly. We were all dressed in tees and shorts...hehhehe. We sat for a while and decided to go off since no one bothered to serve us after 10min.

The dinner at the next place was reasonably tasty and cheap - only MYR8/pax for 2 types of noodles, 1 fried rice, 1 fish, 1 vege and 1 curry chicken bread. Hit the small pasar malam and returned to hotel. Tam jiak me wasn't full and bought KFC drumsticks. I enjoyed my part 2 while the gang had desserts at the cafe opposite our hotel. Hit the sack at about 11pm.

Race Day

Woke up at 5am. Washed up, took some raisin+grain bread & milo that i've brought from SG. Left for startpoint at 5.40am.

The atmosphere was quite nice at start point. The organisers played some music and things were orderly.

7am - race was flagged off. As usual, the 1st 2km was my warmup hence pace was slow. The sun works extra hard in this little town. It started scorching us at about 8am. I was nearing my 10km then. Took a look at my watch - it read 1:08. Was rather demoralised, thinking "I am still running at this timing for 10km after all this while?!" Caught up with Yee Hua's sister at this mark and tried to pace each other for some time. Pep-talking myself to get rid of any negative tots, i picked up my stride and trodded ahead.

At 19km, i finally managed to overtake this 40+ y/o couple who was running together. I had recognised the lady at the beginning kilometers cos she was not dressed in the usual runner's attire & was running in a seemingly comfortable pace. However, i just couldn't catch up with her. I even lost her for some time. After passing them, i cut another 2 Safra ladies. That reli felt motivating :P

The final km, i was chasing this Safra lady. At some point, i was 2-3 strides away from her but she always took off as i was closing in. The last 400m was downslope & i dun wanna risk injuring my ankle cos of an ego to "win". Afterall, i am here to compete with myself. 10m towards the end, she sprinted & finished ahead of me.

Yee Hua & IMD were waiting for us at the end point. The latter was standing by with his videocam. I slowed down slightly to catch my breath. Can't look too unglam for any picture opportunity...hehhehe.

Thirsty me quickly searched for h20 after crossing the finish line. The endpoint tents were so clearly-labelled tat u won't get lost. Runners' welfare was also well taken care of. There was even (free) food like nasi lemak, curry puffs, packeted water (straws given), isotonic drinks, coconut ice cream and chocolate milk provided. Goodie bags containing instant noodles, cereal mixes, muscle cream, aspirin, "beauty" pills were handed out to the finishers. After some stretching, i collected my medal and finisher cert that was neatly wrapped in a plastic sheet.

IMD clinched a 9th position in the men's open cate. Well done! After getting his 2nd Bidor trophy and bidding goodbyes to Vincent, we drove back to Grand Kampar Hotel.

After Race Tots

I clocked 2:24. It's a PB cos my last KOTR timing of 2:18 can't be considered (highly suspected to be under-distanced at 19.6km). Ain't very satisfied abt my result cos was hoping for 2:20. But hey! What more can i ask for? Miracles don't always happen when u dun put in the effort to train specifically for an event *ah bish*

This is one race that i pep-talked quite a lot to myself. I was at a dilemma. On one hand, my ankle injury is not gone totally hence i had to pace myself patiently and not go too fast. Kept telling myself not to accelerate too soon. On the other end, i wanted badly to run under 2:30 in order to clock a sub-5 for my next marathon.

Route - i enjoyed this race tho there were a couple of gradual upslopes. Thanks to the regular hill trg, i could cope well. At certain parts, i had this feeling that i was doing an adventure race...passing by village houses, old folks' homes and plantations. Felt like River Kwai's running leg, nice.

Support - the organisers had in place everything a runner needs in a race (at least to me). Traffic control was good. Sweeping bikes and ambulances were available. Distance & route markers were prominently placed. Distance markers were spaced every 1km towards the last 5km.

Others - I enjoyed the company of Yee Hua's friends & family (her sis). They are a warm & fun bunch. Some of them are fun runners and i always prefer to mix with such a crowd...not so competitive and they just run to keep healthy and most imptly, being happy doing smtg fun with a gp of kakis.

This is definitely one of the best organised small-scale races i've been to - a race organised by runners for runners :) Kudos to the organising team and support crew!

Kampar (after race)

Showered, checked out and went back to the restaurant that we din managed to try the popular Curry Chicken Bread. To our disappointment, the so-called specialty was not that fantastic aferall. The bill was also more expensive than the nite b4. Nonetheless, we still finished all the dishes. Look at our hungry faces and the fatty pork :P

We splitted with the group and proceeded to Yee Hua's place b4 gg to Puduraya where we took our coaches back to SG.

I tot the ride home was gonna be smooth but mm-mm *shakes head* I got 2 bad scares. After the food break at Lucky Garden (the one with the koi pond), i couldn't find my bus! I walked from one end of the terminal to the other in search of it but to no avail. Jialat...Did i exceed the time and the bus left without me??? But i dun recall hearing any announcement of my bus leaving. I asked another 5 star bus driver who was nearby and learnt that my bus is filling up its tank at the gas station. Imagine my relief.

We waited for 10min or more for the bus to arrive. When it did, it nearly knocked me down with its front mirror. @$@!#$@$%@! I was reli angry. I was writing some stuff hence din see the bus driving in. The idiotic driver din even bother to slow down or sound the horn to warn me. He did not apologise but appeared "scared" when i tried to take his picture as he got off the bus. We waited for another 15min on the bus before he returned from his break.

All the delays led us reaching Golden Mile at 11.45pm. There was no bus or MRT service by then. I had to take a cab. Now, i got less $ to feed my piggy bank again :(

Was very tired when i reached home. Took a quick shower, dumped my dirty clothes into the washing m/c & immediately slammed onto the bed. I slept so well that there was no dreams :)

I am gonna appear on TV!

I am so tired. The 2 hours of shoot felt rather long. Quite a lot of preparation work...from brainstorming what to demo...buying the stuff...tidying my place to make it look presentable. I reckon some jobs are not meant for everyone.

Anw, i am so excited. I am gonna appear on TV in May!!! Except that i am not gonna be in Singapore to view it...hehhehe...how "heng" rite? :P Coincidentally, the airing falls on the Thursday that i am supposed to be in Japan.

The program is "Smart - Sheng(save) Qian($) 王on Channel U. Every week, they will look for a person who uses a lesser amount of $ to achieve the same results. My topic was on health. Jean from ex-Toa Payoh Adventure Club called & asked me to appear on this program. Well...i am a playful person and this sounded fun so i accepted it straightaway.

Nearing today, i got abit jittery and can't wait to get it over and done with. That is so typical of me. Each time an event draws closer, i kinda wanna run away and not do it.

Hee...i am relieved (in a happy way) it's over. Hope i din appear to act smart and talk too much. But i will surely look unglam cos I was perspiring profusely and i wasn't wearing any makeup :P

I am still tired now. Gonna leave for trg in less than an hour's time. It's 4-hill run today *sweat* Praying hard that my sore muscles can tong thru' tonite's session and the ankle injury won't recur.

12 sets today

Feeling better? Mmm...slightly but still...

At least for my physical well-being, my ankle is recovering well. I could complete the 12 sets today without pain. I need to watch my foot placing tho, can't land too hard. Here are my splits for today's stairclimb.

Weather: Normal
Pre-Trg Food: Milo & 2 slices of Breadtalk bread at 5.15pm; 1 snicker bar at 7th climb
Post-Trg Food: Rice with potato & vege
Activity: 12 x 40 storeys w/o breaks
Load: 2kg+
Time Started: 6.32pm
Time Ended: 9:25pm
With Me: Catherine, Clarence, Kee Leng, Hwee Hoon, Samuel
Splits:
1) 9:55 / 9:26 / 9:40
2) 10:11 / 11:04 / 11:10
3) 10:40 / 9:55 / 9:56
4) 10:06 / 9:27 / 9:25

I only remembered to climb down at the 9th set. I could still make up for the shortfall since i am left with 4 sets (every 3 sets, climb down i/o taking the lift). Not that easy to climb down then go up again. Felt abit disorientated when i reached ground floor the first time. It became okay after that. Strangely, the down climb actually pushed my timing. Either it reli helped or i am faster cos it's the final 3 sets.

Chatted with HH, Clarence & Cat while waiting for KL & Sam to finish. Left home for dinner while they headed for dinner @ ABC market.

A Bad Day

The time is 5.40am. I am bloggin now simply b'cos by daybreak, i do not wish to remind myself of the unpleasant things that took place the day b4 (and while waiting for my hair to dry).

I went on an aimless long run just now. Hit the road from 5am and reached home just 15min ago. My ankle injury seems to be acting up again. Well...whether if the injury recurs, that i can only know later this morning. I feel kinda bad to have dragged my 2 running buddies along but i am reli thankful to have them ard. We ran/walked the below route...took many walk breaks hence have no idea what was the mileage clocked. Anw, i wasn't keen to know it. I just wanted to run off my unhappiness.

Redhill MRT - Jervois Rd - Orchard Hotel - Scotts Rd - Stevens Rd - Bukit Timah - Sixth Ave - King Albert Park - Jelita - HV - Tyersall Rd - Cluny Park Rd - Serene Ctr (where Serene gotta go off to pick Larry up) - Dalvey Estate - Scotts Rd - Grange Rd - Great World City - Kim Seng Park - all 3 quays - Esplanade - Mtbatten - Fort Rd - ECP Mac - Fort Rd - Esplanade.

Can u imagine i bumped into 2 of my ex-bfs (the more recent ones somemore) within the same day, at the same place, same hour?!? How "lucky"can i get rite? Anw, I never like to be at discord with anyone hence it was normal of me to say the usual hi & bye (just like to any other friend).

To start off my bad day, i got reprimanded just hrs ago by a friend in a manner never before. Fine, i was wilful to delete his profile from my Facebook but no friend, colleague or ex-bf has ever said those stuff to me. The words and tone used reli hurt me badly. Of cos, i've had my share of bad quarrels with good friends like Joanne, Meijin, Cheemeng and Chris before but never one ended so badly like that. It's like someone threw darts at my heart. It totally threw me off.

Anw, since i don't fit into his league of friends, i reckon i shldn't bother him anymore.

Disappointed

I'm so disappointed. I never knew pple can get mad for so long over such a matter. Looks like my apologies have been ignored, taken for granted and thrown away.

Shall do a LSD to run off the negativity.

Thots on Interview Abstracts of Kastor and Samuelson

Went for a run from home to Esplanade and back. Since it's my 1st run after recovery (and a 9-day break), i decided to take it slow on a flat course i/o jumping straight into hills. At Esplanade, I then met up with CM who was on his way from Siemens Ctr to Safra MF.

As i did not take any food b4 the run, i felt my sugar level dropping during the return journey. We went to 7-11 to get some Snicker bars. Bumped into some runners from Running Lab doing their warm-down. Saw IMD too.

My ankle is alright...with a teeny-weeny tinge of discomfort after the run. If i watch my mileage and build it up gradually, i reckon i shld be fine :)

Anw, back to my blog topic today. I was surfing Runners' World in the office and wrote the below thots during my "free" time.

I take delight in the interview abstracts of 2 respectable female marathoners of our times.

"You also can't take for granted that your body has to go 26.2 miles and that's not an easy accomplishment no matter what your fitness level is" - Deena Kastor, 7 April 2008

From Dec 2006 til date, i have ran 4 official marathons & 1 organised off-road ultramarathon. Each time i crossed the finishing line, i am a happier person...but only for that moment & perhaps an hour after. Why? Well...after a while, i think the timing i clocked is nothing to shout about. In fact at times, i feel a little ashamed to disclose my timing to friends & colleagues. Joanne told me that all these are self-imposed expectations.

With regards to running, discontentment is my greatest sin and ironically, the greatest push to improve. Maybe this is also the motivating element for some runners. Although my timings have seen improvement over these few years, i am still unsatisfied with my results. Hmmm...I am asking for too much. My input is little hence how can i expect a big output? Anw, in view of my recent ankle injury, Kastor's abstract further reminded me not to take my body & fitness for granted. In addition, i have to take pride in the fact that i enjoy & am able to run long distance :)

"They accept me for who I am, not what I’ve accomplished.” - Joan Benoit Samuelson, 13 April 2008

I have previously blogged an entry with a similar subject. Heheheh...altho i ain't no great achiever as compared to her, I am still thankful for having many good friends who appreciate me for what i am.

“Marathoning is a metaphor for life,” she said, “so there are a lot of parallels you can draw. I tell people to follow your dream, follow your heart, follow your passion, run your own race and believe in yourself. I think anybody who wants to succeed has to have passion. My love for this sport, you can’t instill it in someone else.” - Joan Benoit Samuelson, 13 April 2008

Yes! One can't instill the love for running in another. And we love in different ways. Come to think of it, the same theory of me showing love in bits seems to reflect in my running style - waddling slowly and improving in pieces...hehehe.

Alrightey! I shall endeavor and earn my 1st sub-5 this year!

Footnote: This is the 1st time i pen down my running goal in B&W. Dunno if i can achieve it but no harm trying rite? *wink*

A Bored Entry

Perhaps i have too much time on hand now since i'm down with injury and can't run. Been thinking of the same topic over and over again. This is not a problem...not at all.

As i grow older, i find it harder to fall in love. Maybe it takes a lot to do so and i'm afraid of getting hurt again. Of cos, this doesn't stop me from falling in love since i am such an emo being *wink*

Izzit reli easier to be loved than to love? Maybe i shld just accept the next guy who is nice to me. Hopefully, he should be an athlete. At my current stage, i reckon only a guy who does sports would understand my passion (hmm.. or izzit addiction or obsession?) for running.

More Patience...

It is rather frustrating when everyone seems to be running except me.

On my way to Clarke Quay last nite, i sighted a couple running and i was so jealous. And while i was chilling out with my girl friends at the pub, my thots were with the sgrunners who, as i drink, are doing the 55km Dusty run :(

Now, as i blog, the gers should be into the half-hour of their 60km run. They are gonna hit trail tonite and run into 7am (at least) tmr. If only i could join them...

Anyway, today isn't my day. Since i could not run, i decided to hit the gym and work out my upper body & quads. I travelled all the way from Punggol to Raffles Place via MRT, only to find out that ALL FF branches are closed at 5pm today for some "Contender" competition! *arrrrr* Some other small unlucky things too eg. tripping twice on the curbs, choked toilet bowl with yucky stuff. With all the "disappointments", i walked into Spinelli and treated myself to a strawberry cheese tart. Sinful indulgence does work at times. It was reli satisfying *gleeful smile*

My ankle is recovering...altho not fast. At least i could walk normally now and only hurts when i climb up and down the stairs.

Just read the articles that Serene sent me. My injury is either a strain or tendinitis. The latter sounds so serious hor? Anyway, i reckon i better take the medicine that doc gave me since Runner's World advised so.

Meanwhile, i need to be patient and more patient...

Patience

This is a small test of my patience.

For the 1st time, i trained til i kena injury :( I was perfectly alrite after the 55km run/walk & even went to gym the next day. I guess what triggered my ankle/calf injury was the run on Mon followed by the stairclimb on Tues.

Worried that i won't have time to run with myself in the midst of all the team trg, i planned to run from Millenia Walk to ECP & back. 1km into the run, i din enjoy it. Slowed down to a walk til i reach Tanjong Rhu. There was many (rich) pple walking their dogs and playing with their kids at Tanjong Rhu. I then decided to take it slow, take in the peacefulness & enjoy the breeze.

When it was about 6.15pm, i started running back to the gym. The pace was not fast but the landing was not smooth. Probably due to the Mizuno shoes i wore. I only experienced discomfort at my legs but no pain...none even til the next day.

On Tues, I reached half an hr earlier & started trg on my own first. I could feel a sharp twitch at my ankle the very first step i took on the staircase. Was so wrong to think that the pain would go away as i progressed. It hurted more with every step i made. I decided to stop at the 6th set. Din feel good abt not completing the session. However, i had to halt. I was limping my way back home by then. Could feel my muscle swelling & pulling tighter as i walked.

Later next day, the pain got worse especially when i went down the stairs. I tried chasing the bus but it hurt the moment i walked fast.

Got mc for today & tmr :P Doc said that there was too much lactic acid (smtg like that...i am poor at para-phrasing medical explanations). He advised me to stay off running for the next 3-5 days. Well...i dun intend to start running til i got better.

To a certain extent, i am angry with myself for not listening to my body. It's my personal responsibility to take care of my own health & body but i did not. Anyway, there's no point blaming myself & saying all the "i should not have"s. I just need to be patient and rest.

Hopefully, i will come back stronger :)

A Girl Meets Bossa Nova 2

I am in love with the songs in this album! I am so gonna play them on my wedding next time :P

This sweet young lady, Olivia, is our homegrown talent. Her voice first caught my ears when i was trying on a blouse at a boutique (of all places, Tiong Bahru Plaza...hehe). I later asked the shop assistant for the artiste name & got a pleasant surprise that she's from Singapore.

The next person whom i found out soon after who shared the same liking was Bryan. What a coincidence right?

Anyway, i chanced upon this 3rd album whilst searching for her older tracks actually. The songs are...what can i say...simply comfy to the senses. They are just perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon, lying on the grass, looking up the clear blue skies...fluffy white clouds...hmmm...i am so dreaming of a getaway again.

I have been awake for the past 14hrs 45min! Gosh i am soooooooooooooo tired!!!

Forcing myself to put in this blog before i can zonk out. Okay...gonna be short. Just finished a 12-hour 55km walk/run. This was our first Trailwalker overnight training. Joining us were Serene, Aili, Sam, Ben(IMD) & Yee Hua(Mrs IMD). We met at Bedok MRT station at 11pm. Started our run at 11.11pm. In comparison to the last 2 night runs, this one had quite many breaks & we walked alot.
