KL Marathon 2008

Just finished KL marathon 12 hours ago.

I went up to KL with Clarence first. After some confusion, we finally settled onto the correct coach at 8am. Bumped into a gp of SGrunners like Kayano, Brokie, Stardust, Deepcruiser, SV etc who were on the same bus. Later at the customs, we saw Aileen & Cooper. The latter was doing the 21km. This year's expo is less organised than last year's. Clarence who forgot to print out his confirmation spent quite some time retrieving his info.

Had lunch with Aileen & Cooper and coincidentally ran into Serene Seah. We joked that we seem to have an annual "gathering" at KL marathon i/o Singapore...hehe. After a long day, we checked into the hotel & slept abit while waiting for Joanne, Cheemeng & friend to arrive later at night. We retired for the day at 11+pm...with another 4 hrs of sleep left :(

It was a blessing in disguise that i booked the "wrong" hotel. I had wanted to book Hotel Noble but got Swiss Hotel instead. It was just a min's walk from the start point - Dataran Merdeka. The race day morning saw us strolling to the flagoff point at 415am.

Joanne's leg was still hurting and hence was worried she couldn't meet the 6 hrs cutoff (I vividly rem it was 7 hrs tho'). Anyway later on, i decided to accompany her run. U know, 42km is a long & lonely journey if u are in pain :)

The distance markers were spaced 5km apart until 33km when a board "9km left" was displayed. It was "counting down" distance markers thereafter. I din really feel that the 32km "heartbreak" hill that Tigger mentioned was jialat. The worse has yet to come.

At abt 36km, we could see runners on the opposite side of the expressway (upslope). However, we could not see where they U-turned. It was a long way before we saw the U-turn point. Good that it din seem so long once we crossed to the opposite side. There was 4km left.

We were done with the really heartbreaking portion & running upslope under the sweltering heat (29deg celsius). I tot i was gonna see the 41km mark...no lor. It's 40km! I was swearing under my breath but kept quiet in order not to demoralise Jo. Looking at my watch, we have just enough time to do it under 6 hrs. I looked back & gestured Jo to push on for a little while more. By now, we had caught up with Mark, an adventurer racer who was on the opposite side earlier on (while we were 2-3km behind?). The traffic lights just before Merdeka Square did stalled our timing. I then spotted Clarence & gang 100m b4 finish line. I stopped for them to take some quick snaps. Seeing Jo nearing. I checked my watch again & hurriedly dashed to the finishing mat...trying to make it under 6.

I clocked 5:59 and Jo just seconds behind me. Had a puking sensation as i stepped on the mat. Nonetheless, it was a gratifying run. Had Baskin Robbins ice cream to reward ourselves after tat.heheh.

Upsides:

1) Both isotonic drink (100plus) & plain water were provided at every 5km. More after 36km.

2) Sponging service (altho i din use it cos i had a cap on)

3) Mobile chip refund service (some volunteers went around to collect our chips & refund us on the spot)

Downsides:

1) Orange cones were sparsely spaced along the roads. Certain drivers disregarded the cones & rode into our running area. Can be quite hazardous if one gets too fatigued to watch the traffic.

2) No traffic police to stop the cars at some points.

3) Boring route. Roads and expressways *yawn*

3 marathons in a month?

Din realise i am so tired. It was a good run today nonetheless.

My colleague jioed for a "light" run. His definition of a light run was to run the hills without load *cold sweat*. Thinking that it was their recovery run, i said ok. The weather was not showing up well when we left the office. Lazy me was hoping that it would rain then we can all go have dinner...hahah. Guess i was tired from the run last nite. I ran a 12km & reached home at 11.20pm. As a result, my active mind kept me half-awake & half-dreaming til 2-3am.

The weather was darn fine...not even a light brush of lightning or a murmur of thunder across the sky. We settled for 2 hills - Telok Blangah & Labrador since it was 7.35pm by the time Hwee Hoon reached MF. We explored a bridge from TB that led us to Lock Road (Villa Bali). It was quite exciting to trespass an unfinished route :P

Since it was a short run, they decided to pick up the pace. I had to follow suit as Serene paced me & refused to let me run my own pace. It was painfuuuul. My gastric hurts..was trying hard to control my breathing & posture but most of the time, i was focused on just catching up. Serene told me to imagine a towline btw us and not let the distance stretch too far.

By the time i was done with the 2 hills & returning to MF, i was breathing thru my mouth...my thighs felt tired & i could feel the strain on my right calf. I still tried my best to speed up, thinking "if i wanna improve, it's gonna hurt.".

When i reached MF, HH said we are gonna do a 55km overnight run next Fri. Oh gosh! That's the weekend after my KL marathon! This means i have 3 marathons within a month! 1 last weekend, 1 this weekend and 1 next weekend *faint* Serene advised that i best take a break from running after KL right til Fri. Or else my muscles may not be able to handle the toil & break down on me.

I am so gonna take it easy & rest from tmr onwards.

(Hee, btw, a crazy idea of forming an all-gers team to do Tahan under 48hrs in Aug popped up just now b4 we started the run. Rest is going to be a luxurious affair *wink*)

Manuel & Jane

Sarah McLachlan's "Angel" was aired on radio just now.

It has been some years since they left. If there's a 3rd dimension, i wonder how they are doing now.

Life goes on. No matter how much their departures hurt, time has kinda eased the pain over the years. Yes, tears will still flow but more within control. People come and go. It's a fact that we adults have to deal with. Heheh...how i adore my times as a kid.

The gang has finished their Tahan mission and reached basecamp at 1230pm today. They started on Good Friday & aimed to finish it within 24hrs. Altho they took 2 days+ & that rendered their mission "unsuccessful", I am just relieved they are safe & sound.

Would we think less of our loved ones if they have failed to achieve a goal? For me, the answer is an obvious no and i guess most pple would take my stand. U touch another person's life with your personality, your times shared with him/her...not what u have achieved. I may run a sub-5 marathon this weekend but i bet it doesn't "matter" to my close friends & family.

I am so glad i am what i am :)

Snoozey Saturday

It's raining again. Thankfully i am back home :)

Made use of the 1-day Fitness First free pass that the gang passed to me during NVM. I got myself a membership! Hahah. Been wanting to do yoga for the longest time to improve my flexibility (running can make u stiff :P). Plus they have swimming pools & a new branch opening up at Buona Vista in July...How could I resist? Hee...i jio-ed Joyce into it too.

Coincidentally, we bumped into Salleh - Clarence & Joseph's ex-teammate for Eco-Xcapade back in 2003. He's a personal trainer at OUB Fitness First. Caught up a bit before i rushed off to my next appt.

Ok...why am i here today?

Answer: I want to blog abt what Serene emailed me abt sports nutrition. I eat more than the others (even the guys!) b4 and during runs but i dun seem to run faster than them leh?! Is there smtg wrong with my metabolism or the type of food i eat?

However, it's comforting to know that i eat less during nite runs. For the recent overnight run, i did not take powergel...only 1 fruit bar+2 mini snickers+milo and i could run 44km! Also, Chee Meng brought to my attn that i can do our 3-hills after taking a small bun+milo an hr prior. He remarked that i was fuel-efficient. Ha! I beg to differ. This "car" only gets efficient at nite.

Glycemic Index determines how the ingestion of food affects the blood sugar level...athletes use this knowledge to control energy levels and to speed recovery.

Athletes should slowly raise blood sugar levels with low GI foods just prior to exertion for steady energy.

To maintain these levels, you shd consume low to moderate GI foods during exercise, then replenish lost glycogen stores with high GI foods directly after exercise. This last phase is especially important if another workout if scheduled within the following 24hrs, in which athletes are advised to slowly taper back to low GI foods by the start of the next workout.

Low GI food - the slow rate of carbohydrate digestion helps ensure that a small and steady stream of glucose trickles into the bloodstream during an event. An hour before you start your workout,
Eg. Apple, chocolate non-fat milk, nuts & seeds, whole-grain bread, tomato soup, orange, all-bran with pears, Ravioli with beef, spaghetti, chickpea salad with vinegar dressing, black-bean soup, veggid lasagna, quinoa with veggies, orange all sport sports drink.

Moderate GI food - ideal during exercise to maintain blood-sugar levels and keep that steady stream of energy from spiking, then falling low.
Eg. banana, carrots, figs, pit bread with peanut butter, rice (not instant rice which has a high GI), orange juice, granola bar, sweet potato, bran muffin, oatmeal, raisins, conscous with chicken, dried figs, trail mix, orange fanta

High GI food - during the resting period it is impt to replenish muscle glycogen as soon as possible. High GI carbohydrates will help increase glycogen synthesis and will limit muscle tissue breakdown. Nutrients consumed 45min after exercise will gave far LESS impact in helping muscles regenerate than nutrients consumed earlier. This glycogen window is especially sensitive within the first 15minutes after a workout, but last up to only 45min post-exercise.
Eg. Bagel, white bread, cornflakes, grape nuts, baked potato, millet, gnocchi, waffles(yumyum), rice cakes, rice pasta, parsnips, potato chips (yumyum), jelly beans, pretzels, dates, watermelon, gatorade, milk.

Looking at the list, i got no problem with post-exercise food! Shall experiment it :)

A Marathon on Good Friday

To think that we ran a marathon on Good Friday. Mmm..actually add 2km+ to that.

Aili, Joyce, Weiming and I met up with Joanne & Serene at Casuarina Prata Shop & started our run from there. I was still feeling weak. The drowsiness is similar to that when i went for my AHM 3 days after i got discharged from SGH.

Tonite's pace was slightly faster, under the lead of Serene & Joyce. I was impressed that Joyce could still run so much at that pace even after laying off for so long. Hmm..she must have done some secret trg *sniggers* :P

The run at Mandai felt long. I reckon we passed by 3 army camps! When we were done with Mandai Road, it was Bukit Timah to tackle. It felt easier to handle it since it was familiar ground. We took our 1st break at a coffeeshop. I took hot milo this time cos my tummy suffered from iced milo+isotonic the last time. We left 18min later.

As we continued into NP, i spotted a group of walkers/runners at the opposite side of the road. Aili then discovered they were sgrunners doing the Prata Run, also 42km. They started at ECP and heading towards ECP...same as where we were gg, just maybe via a different route.

At Jelita, Aili went to the loo. Joanne & Weiming continued as the rest of us waited. We soon caught up with the duo. When we hit Botanical Gardens, Joanne could felt a sharp nagging pain at her right upper tight. It was her old injury acting up again. We walked a bit to see if the pain will go away. It didn't and she decided to go off by the time we reach Tanglin Mall. We searched for a while b4 we found the toilet for her to change into her dry clothes. Sent her off in a cab and we ran along towards Kim Seng Park.

Our destination was getting nearer. Serene & I have jogged here so many times that it wasn't that difficult to handle mentally. The pace kinda picked up from Clarke Quay to Boat Quay as we were "disturbed" by the party-goers...so irritating...hmpf! We took another 15min break at Clarke Quay Cheers. I needed to refill my water. Urgh, why do i always drink so much?

Along Esplanade, i felt the urge to visit the loo. Coincidentally, it was the same time last run, around 5am! I did a quick one and rejoined the gang. The run towards Fort Road was alright as we all knew the route from Stanchart.

Upon reaching Fort Road, we saw the sgrunners group who was ahead of us just now. They cheered for us as we continued to head towards Carpark C4. Hee..we had no idea where C4 is. I only know it's near Marine Cove where McDonalds is. We stopped at McD and walked towards the carpark to check. C4 is the carpark after McD.

Our run stopped at 6.15am, just in time to meet Tigger and gang who was doing Sundown Familiarisation Run -25km. By now, we were all exhausted and decided not to continue with Tigger. Washed up and had McD for breakfast.

Here i am , all showered and clean clean, lying on my bed and blogging abt my "marathon" on a Good Friday. Geez, i am tired. Gonna hit the sack now!

It was a good run. Now i got 4 other friends who ran 42km with me :)

I was trying to take a pic of the moon. It was shining bright. Can u spot it???
The beautiful skyline. We were so glad the run is over.

Shacked faces. My own photo is not fit for viewing..tak glam :P

Obsession?

It's getting obsessive.

I chose to walk home i/o taking the direct bus service. "I could still run", i tot to myself when i reached the void deck. As tho the past 2 days of running was not enough.

Should i do another 42.195 end Sep-Oct to celebrate my birthday? For an obvious reason, i won't do Berlin. Am eyeing the Italian one. This idea is smtg new but it also means i have to be alone on my bday :(

Geez..i am so wilful.

Night Run 1

Gosh..i "concussed" for the past 6 hrs. Once i came out of the bathroom, finished my post-shower ritual (put this cream that cream), i hit the bed and lost consciousness...dead to the world.

Did 2 runs within the same day. Runners are sometimes crazy pple and this one tends to run more out of the blue for distraction. Sometimes, somehow, certain truths sink in better after a run. Or for that matter, do smtg challenging/shocking to wake ourselves to senses! *lol*

Met up with Serene at 6am and ran from home to EC > Natl Sailing Club > Bedok Jetty. Since i was gonna do a nite run later, i kept holding back my pace (guess mental was lazy too). Imagine we clocked 3:03 for that kinda distance..heheh.

Surprisingly, the nite run was a good one. Perhaps they were accomodating to my LSD pace (hee...paiseh).

According to what Aili planned, it was ard 30-32km. However, we din feel we clocked a long distance but we din walked much leh (in my recollection). Only when we were "lost", then we walked abit.

Had quite a lot of fun along the way when Aili & Peter (Batz) were making fun of each other and the latter trying to crack jokes. All these took the toil out of night running while most of us shld be asleep in bed.

The most challenging part was after the 1st break at King Albert Park McD. That was 2am to 3+am before we reached JE for the next restpoint. I reckoned it's cos of the odd hours. I always tend to feel sleepy at that time.

As Aili was planning to do another nite run over the PH next week (Easter), i jioed both of them to join Joanne & me. However, i cautioned them that the pace would be slower since both of us intend to carry load. They were fine with it since the objective is to clear 9hrs.

We had breakfast at Tanglin Market before calling it a day. Here's a summary of our run.

Blue Skies Finally!

After days of rain, i finally see blue skies. I washed up quickly, ate 2 slices of bread and rushed out of the hse for a long-awaited run. That was 12pm.

As this was a run without agenda, i plugged on to my FM radio. Pace wasn't important so i din purposely slow down or speed up. I just ran at whatever pace my heart pleases. Wasn't even watching my breathing...heheh. My aim was just to enjoy the sun and my run :)

I would say it was a good run cos i felt happy. The weather can reli affect how one feels. All of a sudden, everything became so clear. It's time to move on...time to be happy. Like what R said, move on and dun look back.

My next focus would be the 100km.

The Leap Years

Caught this show yesterday and i kinda liked it. Gallen, if u r reading this, sorry for "dragging" u along. This movie can be too idealistic for guys but we girls just love such storylines *smile*

I was keen to watch this show after Kee Leng & Kevin recommended it...2 very different friends. KL has mentioned this out of the blue before Vertical Marathon. The latter told me to go catch it if i wanted to learn abt patience. Anyhow, i wouldn't have watched it if i know it will not end well.

Certain dialogues and scenes reli sent tears welling in my heart. I was fighting back the tears (i hate to cry in public...pride lah). The last love story who touched me in a similar manner was "Before Sunset" (Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy).

The very 1st time Li-Ann (Wong Li Lin) & Jeremy (Ananda) met, the guy said to her..."Li-Ann, you are very brave, not afraid that there will be no one to love you for all these years, only willing to wait for the right one to appear. You love not for the sake of needing someone to accompany you through the lonely times but only when you truly feel you met love". There are many people who settle for a relationship just for the sake of company.

Li-Ann mentioned, "Do you know? The most common word used in a love letter is 'miss', not 'love'." Come to think of it, it's kinda true.

A point worth mentioning is that the movie celebrates friendship. The friendship btw Li-Ann & KS (Qi Yuwu) and the girls was so strong. Other than the love btw a man & woman, we shldn't neglect the love btw friends. To Stacey, Yanting, Irene, Chris, AhBu, Xiaoji, Cecile, Lene & Meijin: Thank you for standing by my side all these years. I love you gers!

At the point when KS noticed Li-Ann wasn't feeling happy about getting married to Raymond, he questioned her if she felt joy with her hubby-to-be and if he made her forget Jeremy. Li-Ann was dumb-founded. How i totally agree with KS! If you reli meet someone whom u can connect, u will naturally feel happy with him/her & the past will no longer linger.
I would recommend this movie only if u r someone who believes in romantic love. Watch this with an open mind...and yes, heart :)

Some meaningful quotes on the calendar in the movie:
"It's not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves- William Shakespeare"
"Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous- Albert Einstein"
"A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to aviod it- Jean de La Fontaine"
"In three words I can sum up what I learnt in life: It goes on- Robert Feart"
"if you are not too long, I will wait for you all my life- Oscar Wilde"

Backdated Entry: Post MR25

Just completed my first ultramarathon yesterday. A crazy thing that i most prob wldn't do next yr? I only decided to sign up during the Christmas week when i had nothing better to look forward to after Stanchart. Afterall, Tokyo Marathon is still some time away. Nah..the truth is i needed some distraction.

Anw, it was reli impromptu hence i wasn't trained for it. Just did 1 round MR with Serene, followed by a MacR-BT-MacR w/Jo & Serene. I jioed 2 of them who surprisingly agreed to run with me. After the event, Jo said that she had doubted her hasty commitment slightly & the latter only confirmed to run 2 days before the race. '

1st round - 1:29min. I took it slowly as i knew i had to warm up properly & avoid an "early" death. Ran with Joanne & Serene was way in front.

2nd round - 10am. Cldn't rem much. June & Karen had arrived at the carpark to pass us food and morale support. Took some pictures. Before we took off, we agreed to have lunch after our 3rd round

3rd round 11am+. I had tot it to be dragging but surprisingly, my pace was faster than the 1st 2 rounds. The weather had turned rather sunny by now and i cld reli feel the heat taking its toil on me. I din have appetite to eat bread or drink milo. Took an organic muesli bar (yucks organic food isn't nice) and downed a Red Bull. Serene had oredi rested there for 20min before i came in. Jo was just 10-15min behind me.

4th round - Huff & puff. I was trying to keep up with this uncle who was ahead of me. When he walked, i followed but whenever it was "runnable", he did and i can't catch up! I lost him after we turned out into Lornie Road.

5th round - I totally lost my mental strength. Couldn't run properly at the start. I just watched Jo & Serene ran ahead. When they stopped to walk, i did too. Tried to run abit but i just cldn't keep my breathing together. When we reached the waterpoint before ranger station, i was feeling dizzy...at the same time, breathless. Serene told me to take some candy. They talked & walked with me...all the way til Golf Link. It was scorchy there hence we decided to run. Overtook 2 guys n a ger and never saw them again(phew). As soon as i hit the trail, i stopped to catch my breath.

Larry came to support Serene at the end of our trail route, just before Lornie Road. Took powergel and oral electrolyte at the bus-stop waterpoint. Serene said we will finish it together. She then ran alongside with me...Geez..i reli felt like crying then but held back my tears..waste energy mah..hahah.

I was so happy to see the end point getting nearer. A hyper Joanne slowed down to wait for me. The 3 of us ran in together...1141, 1142 and 1143. We are certified Ultramarathoners now...dun pray pray.

The rest of the evening was dining and chatting with Jo, June and their New Zealander friend - Uncle Wayne (Harrison Ford lookalike). Dunno whether was it excitement or the caffeine from the powergel, i couldn't get to sleep til 2am.
Looking back at the things i have done in 2007, i am rather happy. River Kwai, KL Half-Marathon, Mizuno Mt Faber & Bedok Reservoir, NB Real Run Trial Run, WHR, AHM barely a week after i got discharged, Marathon 5:30, accompanied Rachel for GE 10km, ran on Karen's behalf for Shape Run, a barely finished Triladies (28:37 for 5km fun run). Though there have been less-than-pleasant issues like holiday@SGH after AACIV, office shift to Jurong, running depression & a car accident, it is still a good yr...the re-affirmed & long-lost friendships found..those unworthy lost friendships. We all grow wiser with the passing of each yr :) Let's toast to a better 2008!

Rainy Days/NVM

Did 3 runs since i came back from Tokyo. Been raining every now and then. Came home n snoozed for a while after supporting the gang at National Vertical Marathon this afternoon. Supposed to go gym but too lazy. Well, i always detest the idea of gg gym and the weather was simply too nice to resist nua-ing...hee..what an excuse.

26Feb (Wed) - Met up with Serene and ran 2 hills (Labrador then MF). My 1st run since back. Was finding the motivation to keep up. Wanted to slack but hee, how to nua when it comes to running hills?

Was so engrossed in talking during the run that i forgot to time myself.

28Feb (Fri) - Felt like gg for a run and hence i did. When i hit Qtown, i changed my mind and did the Botanical Gdn route instead of Clementi. Such is the freedom of running.

1Mar (Sat) - Supposed to hit MacR this morning but heard that the police is doing a search near Thomson area. The Bali terrorist who was imprisoned in SG escaped! Tho the probability is low, i dun think i want to bump into him in the jungle and hence timid me changed my running route for the day :P

Went for my fav route of the Quays. About half an hour into the run, it started to pour. The drizzle went from small to bigger raindrops. I was thoroughly drenched and the streets were rather empty. Seems like only this crazy woman was running...heheh.

By the time i returned home, the rain went back to a drizzle. I am glad i din catch a cold. Under Joseph's lead, the rest of the Tahan-in-1-day gang did BT trail in the rain too *salute*
